DAY 5 – 09/09/2012 – JOUR 5
Our first visit is the Roman theatre. There is first a
museum with a lot of archaeological objects and information about history and
about the discovery of the monument, in 1990 only. It has been completely restored
since then and although, for this reason, it does not seem as real as many
antique theatres (en Greece for example), it is impressive. We have a clear
idea of its actual size in the past and we can walk around to visit the cavea,
the porticus, the orchestra…
The theatre was probably in use between 5 and 1 B.C. It had
a capacity for 7,000 spectators and had a maximum diameter of 87m. Given its
size and the quality of the material used, it is thought to have been an extremely
important building in Cartagena during the Augustinian period.
Notre
première visite est celle du théâtre romain. Il y a tout d’abord un musée où
nous pouvons voir de nombreux objets archéologiques, donnant de nombreuses
explications sur l’histoire et la découverte du monument, en 1990 seulement. Ce
dernier a été complètement restauré depuis et même si, pour cette raison, il ne
paraît pas aussi réaliste que de nombreux théâtres antiques (de Grèce, par
exemple), il est très impressionnant. On peut se faire une idée claire de la
taille qu’il avait à l’époque et on peut s’y promener pour visiter la scène, le
portique, l’orchestre…
Le théâtre
était probablement utilisé entre l’an 5 et l’an 1 avant J.-C. Sa capacité est
de 7 000 spectateurs et son diamètre maximal de 87m. En raison de sa taille et
de la qualité des matériaux de construction utilisés, c’était sans doute un
bâtiment extrêmement important à Cartagena pendant la période augustinienne.
